I love my snake plant and it’s my favorite of the plants for a meditation space on this list.

When Before I bought my first snake plant, I had managed to kill almost every other “easy to grow” houseplant (mostly due to over-watering).

It is also unique in that it’s one of the few plants that can convert carbon dioxide into oxygen at night.

So if you’re in a place that doesn’t get a lot of fresh air, surrounding yourself with snake plants can help clean and oxygenate your space.

How to care for your snake plant

To care for a snake plant, water sparingly when the soil is completely dry, provide bright but indirect light, use well-draining soil, avoid cold drafts, and clean the leaves with a damp cloth.

These low-maintenance houseplants don’t need a lot of attention, so they’re great for beginners or anyone who wants to add some greenery to their home.

2: Orchids

Ease of care: 4/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Health benefits: 4/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Mood booster: 5/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I have a soft spot for orchids.

After gaining some confidence by not killing my snake plant, I was accidentally introduced to my next favorite plant, the orchid. Accidentally, because while I was helping a neighbor with their shopping and she dropped one of three orchids on the floor, cracking the pot.

She said they were gifts and needed to buy another plant with a pot quickly and asked if I wanted the potless orchid. I didn’t have a plant pot (or I would have offered t to my neighbor). So to this day, my violet-colored orchid lives in a 1-liter olive oil tin.

With beautiful flowers that look like butterflies, the orchid brightens up any space.

How to care for your orchids

To care for orchids, place them in a spot with bright, indirect sunlight, and water them only when the soil is almost dry.

Avoid overwatering or letting them sit in standing water. Use a well-draining potting mix designed for orchids and fertilize them with a balanced orchid fertilizer once a month during the growing season. Some orchids may require specific care, so be sure to research the specific needs of your orchid species.

3: Money tree

Mood booster: 4/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

There are many variations of money plants, but all are popular in the Feng Shui community for being a symbol of luck and prosperity.

Money tree plants are good at absorbing CO2 at night and increasing humidity in dry environments, so these are great plants to be around in the evening.

How to care for a money tree

To care for a money tree, place it in bright, indirect sunlight (I learned this the hard way by losing 3 in a windowsill that saw lots of direct sun. Oops.) and water it thoroughly once a week or when the top inch of soil is dry.

Ensure the pot has drainage holes to prevent overwatering. The money tree prefers a humid environment, so mist the leaves with water occasionally.

Avoid exposing the plant to cold temperatures and drafts. Fertilize it with a balanced houseplant fertilizer every month during the growing season. With proper care, the money tree can live for many years and bring good fortune to your home.

4: Peace lilies:

Unsurprisingly, peace lilies are the symbol of bringing peace.

A minimal plant for minimal spaces with its white flag-like flower and luscious green leaves, they are also great for purifying the air or harmful pollutants.

They also absorb excess moisture from the air discouraging mold and mildew.

How to care for peace lilies

To care for peace lilies, place them in a shaded area with indirect sunlight and water them once a week or when the top inch of soil is dry. Avoid overwatering or letting the plant sit in standing water, as it can lead to root rot.

They prefer a humid environment, so mist the leaves with water occasionally or place a tray of water nearby. Fertilize them with a balanced houseplant fertilizer every six to eight weeks during the growing season.

Remove any yellow or brown leaves and keep an eye out for pests. With proper care, peace lilies can bloom for several months and add beauty to your meditation room.

Scientifically shown in studies to relax the nervous system, lavender is used in a range of sleep and antiseptic products.

Lavender is known more for being an outdoor plant, but can also be kept indoors during the colder autumn and winter months.

A few deep breaths of lavender can help with calming your mind when you feel overwhelmed and help to relax you before a good night’s sleep.

How to care for lavender

To care for lavender, plant it in well-draining soil with full sun exposure. Water deeply but infrequently, allowing the soil to dry out between watering. Fertilize it with a balanced fertilizer once or twice a year during the growing season.

Prune the plant in early spring to encourage bushiness and remove any dead or woody stems. Harvest the flowers when the buds begin to open and dry them in a well-ventilated area.

Lavender plants can also benefit from mulching around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. With proper care, lavender can thrive and fill your meditation garden with its soothing fragrance.

Known for its health and healing properties, aloe vera is also a great reminder for letting go of things that no longer serve your well-being.

As aloe vera grows and during repotting, some of the leaves wither and need to be trimmed if the plant is to thrive.

This can serve as a reminder that as you go through life, you may need to let go of who or what may be stopping you from thriving.

How to care for aloe vera

To care for aloe vera, put it in a spot where it gets lots of indirect sunlight, like a sunny window. Water it when the soil is dry, but be careful not to overwater it or let it sit in standing water.

It doesn’t need much fertilizer, but you can give it a small amount once or twice a year if you want to. It’s a hardy plant and doesn’t need much attention, but you should make sure to prune off any dead or yellow leaves to keep it looking healthy.

If you ever get a sunburn or a small cut, you can break off a piece and use the gel inside to soothe the affected area.

Change the water once a week and add a few drops of liquid fertilizer every month or two. You can also trim the tops of the stems to encourage growth and maintain its shape.

Give your space form and structure

Having a place in your home filled with these calming plants sets a boundary to show that this is a place for healing and relaxation.

Mood lifting

Looking after these plants does a couple of things. First, being close to nature is shown to improve your general mood, and second, stopping to take care of your plants also serves as a reminder to stop and take care of yourself.

Boost serotonin levels

Linked to the last point, interacting with houseplants helps to reduce stress and boost serotonin levels – the feel-good hormone.

Improving air quality

Plants improve air quality by absorbing carbon dioxide and other pollutants from the air and releasing oxygen through photosynthesis. Some plants, like the snake plant, can even remove harmful chemicals like formaldehyde and benzene from the air. This makes them great natural air purifiers, which can benefit your health and well-being.
